The Supreme Court on Monday stressed the need for stronger measures to prevent crimes against women in Delhi, telling the Centre and Delhi Police that authorities must create an environment where women feel safe on the streets and while using public transport.
A bench led by Justice JB Pardiwala was hearing a suo motu case concerning recent rape cases and other crimes against women in Delhi-NCR. The court said authorities must focus on preventing offences rather than responding only after crimes occur.
Supreme Court stresses women’s safety
The bench said there appears to be a perception that women are unsafe in parts of the national capital, particularly in vulnerable areas.
The court stressed that every woman in Delhi should feel safe while walking outside at night or travelling by metro or road. It also said any gaps in the system should not create conditions that facilitate crime.
Court calls for stronger crime prevention
The Supreme Court said authorities must prioritise prevention rather than focusing only on what happens after an offence has been committed.
Justice Pardiwala also called for a strong deterrent against people inclined to commit serious offences against women. The court urged Delhi Police to take a firm approach against those accused of rape and other serious crimes.
The bench also referred to Article 21, which guarantees the right to life and personal liberty, and said concerns raised by human rights groups should not prevent authorities from taking strict action against those accused of serious offences.
